We All Have Two Choices

We can make a living or we can design a life – Jim Rohn

Here is a philosophy I can finally relate to. Thanks Jim Rohn.

When I was going through the growing years (the teenage years mostly) I couldn’t decide what I wanted to do with my life. The choices were without limits and time restrictions; represented no real barrier or fence to frame my decision making ability. So, like many others, I drifted… through university, through relationships, through jobs… through life for a while.

And then of course there is this little platitude… “we never plan to fail, we just fail to plan”. Don’t we love that one! How can we plan our course in life when we haven’t yet figured out what road to take?

It’s like that catch 22 we encounter when we go for our first real job straight out of university and we are asked how much experience we’ve had, and the answer is we can’t have experience until someone actually hires us to give us the experience. Duh…!

But, here we are… at least here I am… actually in a career – Real Estate. And this is not my first career. It’s going to be my last career. Is it one in which I make a living or design a life? How to separate these two so that they make sense?

To me, it’s as simple as this...  and we’ve all heard this one before:

If you give a man a fish, you feed him today. If you teach a man to fish, he will feed himself for the rest of his life.

In other words, if you are making a living, you are working today for today. It’s one way to live. It’s a “hit and run” type of life. But if you design a life you will plan long term, and that means you will conduct yourself in more honorable ways of dealing with the world.

In my industry, Real Estate, as with many other industries, there are “hit and run” practitioners. They last for a short time, and then they are gone. The ones who believe in education and quality, in honesty and integrity, in caring and fairness are the glue that holds our industry together. They are the rock on which the industry stands, and upon which the public depends.

I am fortunate to know many of those people, fortunate indeed to work with many of those professionals, and blessed to have a life I have had a hand in designing for myself and my family.

If you are a Torontonian and you want to discover what it means to design a life for yourself and your loved ones, give me a call some time. I would be happy to share with you.
