Reputation is everything
You don’t have to be a sociologist to understand the concept of ethnicity. Watch your children. When a five year old enters a park or pre-school classroom of five year olds, the others look to see who it is. Five year olds check out other five year olds. Teens check out other teens. Women check out other women.
It’s the same with ethnic people. They want to be in a community of other “a-likes”. Many reasons exist for this. Similarity of thinking, religion, language, social class and so on.
Teens are a perfect example of this. If you don’t walk the walk or talk the talk, you simply do not fit in.
We all want our children to fit in. But with who?
So, if money was not an object, and you had a university aged child, would you send him/her to UofT or Oxford in England? Both universities will give your child a great education and he/she will come away with a degree. Here’s the difference.
At UofT your child will be associating with other students the majority of who will be from or living in Toronto.
At Oxford your child will be associating with students from around the world. This will elevate your child’s profile and serve him/her better in the future.
We are all judged not only by what we say and do, but also by our “status”. So, the idea is to rise in status. Many of us accomplish this by what we wear, where we live, the car we drive and so on. The successful ones accomplish this through the friends and business associates we nurture.
“Reputation by Association”
Final exam! If this is what you want for your children, is it something that you are doing for yourself as well?
